ENGL 12042. INTRODUCTION TO AFRICAN AMERICAN DRAMA To lend context to the successes and obstacles of contemporary African American theatre-makers, this course offers a survey of black American drama from the 19th century to the present. Historical and cultural documents will accompany our readings of influential dramatic texts in order to locate the ever-evolving goals and functions of black drama. Essentially, students will consider the impacts of institutional oppression, intersectional identities, and retentions of African diasporic traditions on black American theatre artists at various moments in history.
