AFST 10000. INTRODUCTION TO AFRICANA STUDIES In this discussion-based course, we will examine Africana Studies as a legitimate field of scholarly inquiry and enterprise within the academy. In addition to exploring the development of the field and its significance, we will consider some of the theoretical and philosophical perspectives that contribute to the field and the shared and nuanced ways that people of African descent have used their agency to bring about social change. We will examine the ways in which the politics of race, gender, class, and sexuality inform the discipline and some of the sociopolitical issues that continue to dominate the field. [AH, D, HSS, PPRE, SJ]
