EDUC 11000. USING PHONICS TO TEACH READING AND DEVELOP LITERACY In this course students explore techniques and strategies used to teach children to match, blend, and translate letters of the alphabet into sounds they represent and meaningful units. Emphasis is placed on the following topics: technology-related resources; the nature and role of word recognition; multiple literacies; methods and rationale for the instruction of phonemic awareness; fluency and vocabulary; instructional strategies for using childrens literature; diversity; differentiation; decoding; spelling; and word recognition. This class includes a series of focused observations in various early childhood classrooms.
