FYSM 10100-04

The most glorious moments in your life are not the so-called days of success, but rather those days when out of dejection and despair you feel rise in you a challenge to life, and the promise of future accomplishments.—Gustave Flaubert

No life is left unmarked by struggle and difficult times. We fail, we falter, and we learn to pick ourselves back up and continue to walk forward. In this course we’ll dive into research from the social sciences to discover practices that can improve our ability to bounce back from adversity and to use our own experiences to grow our kindness. In these uncertain times, people are expressing the need to find practices that build resilience. Students in this course will assess their own resilience, learn skills to boost it, and discover methods for growing in kindness and empathy.

This course syllabus is subject to change, as health and safety concerns may lead to campus-wide policy changes at any time during the semester. I also want to allow for flexibility based on your feedback. However, to allow you adequate time for planning and preparation, I will make an effort to abide by the major assignment due dates listed on the schedule.
