FYSM 10100. FIRST-YEAR SEMINAR IN CRITICAL INQUIRY

Listening to people with opposing viewpoints on political issues — whether in-person or through media — has become less common in recent years in the American society. We are becoming more polarized and losing common ground with those who disagree with us. In this seminar, we will explore questions such as: What does it mean to hear the other side, and why is it important? In what ways are we currently exposed (or not) to diverse opinions? Are there situations where we should not listen to opposing viewpoints? In order to examine these questions, we will read and critically reflect on texts in philosophy and other disciplines. We will also practice hearing the other side, especially in podcast episodes produced by groups of students.
