ENGL 22017. REWRITING SHAKESPEARE/SHAKESPEARE REWRITING In this class well consider the figure of William Shakespeare and the many ways his works intersect with acts of rewriting or artistic recreation. Focusing on half a dozen plays and a few poems, well ask: How does Shakespeare work with his sources in classical and medieval literature? How have later writers and directors repurposed his works for their own times and artistic purposes? How do we as scholars, artists, and citizens also rewrite Shakespeare through close reading, analytical writing, and creative reinterpretation? Plays will (likely) include Julius Caesar, Henry V, Much Ado About Nothing, Othello, Macbeth, King Lear, The Tempest; adaptors (ditto) include Virginia Woolf, Jane Austen, Aime Cesaire, Laurence Olivier, Akira Kurosawa, Kenneth Branagh, Keith Hamilton Cobb.
