RELS 26947. DEATH AND AFTERLIVES What happens to us when we die? How should one understand death? Is there an afterlife? This course explores how diverse religious traditions, including Hinduism, Indigenous traditions, Christianity, Islam and Judaism, understand death and the afterlife. We will study sacred texts, rituals, personal narratives, and popular culture to uncover how individuals perceive and cope with death. The course concludes with a discussion of debates on near death and out of body experiences, reincarnation, and the death penalty. [R]
