EAST 29901. MANGA AND ANIME IN JAPANESE AND GLOBAL CONTEXTS This course provides a critical introduction to manga and anime at the intersection of Japanese and global media. We will consider factors shaping the production, consumption, and fandoms of manga and anime in Japan and globally. We will also examine the ways that manga and anime tell stories, and how these stories help us to explore topics of importance to the modern world: technology and the body; life in dystopian or post-apocalyptic worlds; the limits of Eurocentric modes of representation; gender in the context of cross-cultural interactions and economic forces; the status of religion and the supernatural.
