PSCI 23912. POLITICAL THEORY OF POLICING This upper-level political theory course examines the relationship between policing, the police power, and modern political order. We do so in the shadow of a crisis of legitimacy for policing in North America, heightened attention to endemic police violence, and calls for expansive police reform and abolition. Our central concerns will be threefold. First, what are the central legitimations of police power in modern political thought -- especially liberal thought? Second, what are the conditions of possibility for police violence? Third, what tools does contemporary political theory offer for thinking about ongoing criticisms and transformations of police power in North America?
