MUSC 19908. SOUNDSCAPES: MUSIC IN A CHANGING WORLD This course introduces the tools and concepts of ethnomusicology to examine diverse ways that people across the globe make music useful and meaningful in their lives. Using the framework of soundscapes-the ever-changing relationship of musics sound, setting, and significance-it gives emphasis to the mobility and interconnectedness of peoples and to the persistence and adaptability of musical practices in the twenty-first century. Key issues include migration, memory, the global marketplace, dance, ritual, politics, and identity. This course fulfills in part the writing requirement for graduation.
