CHIN 25000. CULTURE OF CULTURAL REVOLUTION With catastrophic consequences, the Cultural Revolution (1966-76) had its roots in the May Fourth Movement (1919) to save Chinese culture from itself. This course traces the political origins of Chinese identity crisis by reading memoirs, biographies and works of fiction showing the scope of global communism and socialism. Students are also introduced to writings by Hegel and Marx to understand Chinas complex relations to the Enlightenment and to other democratic revolutions in France, Russia and Cambodia. The course addresses the questions of modernity and world history as powerful processes to democratize and redefine the ideas of social justice and progress. [AH, GE, SJ]
