RELS 19903. ABORTION, RELIGION, AND LAW This course will explore abortion, personhood, religion, and law (civil and religious) from multiple religious perspectives. Case studies are drawn from sacred experiences, texts, ethics, law (religious and civil) and phenomena. These case studies are located in multiple time periods and cultures but will be in conversation with the current overturning of Roe v. Wade (Dobbs v. Jackson) in the United States. Our guiding questions are: What is abortion? What is a person? How does each sacred tradition define abortion? Personhood? What is the relationship of religious law to civil law? How ultimately, do you understand the relationships between abortion, religion, and law? What definitions, justifications, and informed arguments will you employ? [R, SJ]
