ENGL 21041. INTRODUCTION TO FEMINIST DISABILITY LITERARY STUDIES This course will provide an introduction to the interdisciplinary field of feminist disability studies while also emphasizing disability as a point of critical inquiry in literary studies alongside race, gender identity and expression, and class. This course considers how ableism-a system of oppression that works with racism and heterosexism-shapes disability in U. S. culture. We will examine representations of disability and difference with the goal of questioning efforts to categorize, label, and isolate disability as a knowable, fixed category. In addition, we will consider the connections between disability, ability, queerness, and gender. Methodologies will include reading and analyzing poetry, memoir, cultural critique, digital media, and fiction. [AH]
